I assume these must be one company and they constantly change their company name and URL because they keep getting outed. If this is your first time getting one of these, there is no one trying to register the Chinese version of your domain. It’s all a ruse to extort money. Millions of these go out to emails addresses they scape from the internet – most likely the whois database.

Below is the original email:

This is getting tiresome. Another variation of the Chinese domain scam. The exclamation point abuse in the first sentence and cheesey web 2.0 reflective logo is just icing on the cake. Once again, what makes this a scam is no one is trying register the Chinese version of my domain name. It’s all a fabrication – a shakedown to extort money.

Oh, will they ever stop. It’s like a game of Whack-a-Mole with these scam outfits. Knock one down and another pops up. In case you don’t know how it works, there is no one trying to register the Chinese suffix of my domain. It’s a scare tactic to get me to buy some useless, overpriced domains.

The Internet is a Breeding Ground for Spammers, Scammers and Sociopaths

Another variation of the Chinese domain registration scam. Pretty much anyone who owns a domain gets these eventually. What’s the scam? There is no one trying to buy these variations of your domain. It’s made up. The idea is to scare you into buying up a bunch of useless, overpriced,  Asian domain suffixes from them. It’s really sad we live in a world where people sit around and intentionally develop scams to rip people off.

Death is Too Good for These Scammers

This scam is really basic. They use the fear of not performing well in search engines to dupe you into thinking that you are already enrolled with this “service” and that failing to renew will hurt your online presence. The fraud works on two levels:

1. Trick you into renewing a service you don’t actually have.

2. Use your ignorance of how search engines work to sell a completely useless service as an outrageous price.

What’s most interesting about this email is that the domain in question isn’t even hosted. There is no website there and I don’t ever plan to put one up. They simply scraped my email off the whois registry and sent it out like they did to about 10 million other random people.

Bottom line – no one needs to submit their website to any search engine. No only is it pointless but they find your site all by themselves with ease. Heck, they even find the content you DON’T want them to find.

Want an Example of Everything That Is Wrong in This World? Domain Registry of America Does Us the Honors.

This scam is very basic. Domain Registry of America sends out millions of these domain expiration notices. The trouble is, if you receive one, your domain isn’t registered with them. Back in the early 2000’s they used to send out notices that looked exactly like a bill. It was only by reading the fine print on the back did you learn that they were in fact NOT your domain registrar and by paying the “bill” you were actually authorizing to transfer your domain to them. To add insult to injury, the new fees were usually double the cost of what you were paying at your current registrar.

This scam was so blatantly deceptive that in December 2003 the FTC slapped their wrist and they were forced to give a token amount of refunds and tweak their advertising a bit. In my opinion they should of had their corporate charter revoked and the CEO thrown in jail. Of course, this is America, so no such thing happened.

So here’s what their notices look like now. Hardly and improvement. If you get one of these, please just recycle it.

So this is the new and improved Domain Registry of America scam letter. They fiddled with the wording a bit, but it's still the same goal: to trick you into tranfering your domain to them at the outrageous price of $30 per year. That's even more than the scumball predators over at Network Solutions!

Normally these requests go straight to my trash. I’m also not one to publically call someone out. But this one was particularly galling for three reasons.

1. The link extortion, uh, I mean request.

2. The page they are offering links on already has 189 links on it, has a PageRank of zero and the Title tag is “New Page1″. So much for the page being “popular”.

3. Their website is just a complete disaster and they don’t have an about page or any information that would let me know who is behind this organization. Very sketchy.

If you get one of these, don’t waste your time. Anyone who puts a link to you on their site and then threatens to remove it if you don’t reciprocate is not a person you want to do business with.
