Thanks for exposing this scam. I got EXACTLY the same words just now from “John” regarding my valuable http://www.visit-qatar.com web-site. i was not sure whether John was genuine. His email did not sound right in its tone or use of grammar.
Has anyone fallen for this? What happened? Did they lose domains or did these guys get hold of banking details?

I loled so hard at this one.
So mindful, Ms. Zhang. I don’t believe a damn bit that Chinese people will be so “mindful” and “moral” even to withhold domain registration for someone the don’t even know. While in fact if it’s their relatives they still don’t even care. lol

I got the mail early last week and are in the process of registering my website. Ofcause I’m not going to pay anything to this guy (Angela), but I just want to see how far I can take them (scam the scammer).
I pretty sure that I will face all kinds of problems and delays from my side, as well as finding cheaper alternatives and problems with banks etc. etc.
If you have any experience or good suggestions to keep me going for as long as possible I will greatly appreciate this.

I have received a similar e-mail from John Wang. Exactly the same wording and even the company applied for registering our website is Huatai(rings a bell?. I am very happy that I checked on Google before falling for this scam and I am glad to note that there is a caution about this going around through this blog. Guys, thank you very much for sharing this scam and I will alert more people from my side. What alerted me was that the charges for domain registration is Euros 168.00 and why would the Chinese ask for payment in Euros?

Thanks for the tip…so what are the first steps on exposing these scumbags and stopping them? Is it completely legal in China to scam money out of people like this? I am guessing not and I’m hoping to get these people caught but I guess just putting the e-mails to spam is the only answer. I have to say that this scam must be a lot more effective than the old scam of the Dr. from Africa who needs a bank account to transfer millions of dollars into etc…this one is a little less obvious but I thought it was worth checking out anyways, so thanks for your post.

Dear ,
Based on your company object their application, we have suggested they should choose another name to avoid this conflict but they insist on this name as CN/Asia domain names (.asia/.cn/.com.cn/.net.cn/.org.cn) and internet keyword on the internet. In our opinion, maybe they do the similar business as your company and register it to promote his company.
According to the domain name registration principle: The domain names and internet keyword which applied based on the international principle are opened to companies as well as individuals. Any companies or individuals have rights to register any domain name and internet keyword which are unregistered. Because your company haven’t registered this name as CN/ASIA domains and internet keyword on the internet, anyone can obtain them by registration. However, in order to avoid this conflict, the trademark or original name owner has priority to make this registration in our audit period. If your company is the original owner of this name and want to register these CN/ASIA domain names (.asia/.cn/.com.cn/.net.cn/.org.cn) and internet keyword to prevent anybody from using them, please inform us. We can send an application form and the price list to you and help you register these within dispute period.
Kind regards

This is greating harder and harder to detect scams as the websites are starting to marry up with the products our companies are actually associated with therefore ringing more alarm bells .

Subject: Domain Name and Internet Keyword
Dear Manager,
The checking time will be over soon, we have not received your reply about the domain name and internet keyword since our last communication. You must know domain name takes open registration, this is international domain name registration principle. So the company has right to register them. As a domain name registrar, we have no right to refuse their application. We aslo suggest this company should change another name but they stick to this name so if your company want to prevent anybody from using these domains, the only way is to register these CN/ASIA domains and internet keyword. In our checking time, your company has first priority to register them. Could you tell us whether your company want to make this application to prevent anybody from using them or not?
Best Regards

Hi – my business has just received the Angela Zhang email. I believe it’s about the tenth this year (always different names and slightly different companies – but consistently ygnetwork as source).
Thanks for the confirmation when I originally checked (about a year ago).
It’s quite a clever scam – rather more subtle than the “let us have your bank account details because we’ll let you have 20% of $30million if you do”!!
Thanks – good work!

And the really cool bit is, if you go look up the domain names they are threatening to register, they are non-existent, which means it IS just scare-tactic cold-calling to get them sales, and they never really do follow through registering the names.

This email is from China domain name registration center, which mainly deal with the domain name registration and dispute internationally in China and Asia.
On December 29th 2011, We received Tianhua Ltd’s application that they are registering the name ” newrypoolleague ” as their Internet Keyword and ” newrypoolleague .cn “、” newrypoolleague .com.cn ” 、” newrypoolleague .asia “domain names etc.., they are China and ASIA domain names. But after auditing we found the brand name been used by your company. As the domain name registrar in China, it is our duty to notice you, so we are sending you this email to check. According to the principle in China, your company is the owner of the trademark, In our auditing time we can keep the domain names safe for you firstly, but our audit period is limited, if you object the third party application these domain names and need to protect the brand in china and Asia by yourself, please let the responsible officer contact us as soon as possible. Thank you!
